The third grade students of Room 311 recently spent a month engaged
in an in-depth study of various animals and their habitats, including
the Meerkat, Tiger, Gray Wolf, Great White Shark, Emperor Penguin,
Macaroni Penguin, Red Eyed Tree Frog, and Bull Frog. Using informational
non-fiction texts and the Internet, students gathered information on
their animal’s habitat, food preference, adaptations, and physical
appearance. They were then required to organize the information they
gathered using EmPower paragraph templates and draft detailed,
well-structured reports. Some students went even further and included a
Table of Contents and Glossary as supporting organizational features.
On Thursday, January 23rd, friends and family were invited to a
habitat extravaganza where students shared what they learned along with
their reports and a diorama they created at home to represent their
animal’s habitat. Both students and their guests learned a lot of new
information about some of the world’s most fascinating creatures!
