Letters to Leaders

Letters to Leaders
Posted on 02/07/2018
During the month of January, the first grade students of Room 108 and 109 wrote many persuasive letters to classmates, siblings, parents, and teachers to make requests and solve problems. They learned the importance of supporting their opinions with specific examples and strong reasons, and many students discovered that their letters were able to change their readers’ minds!

As the culmination of the unit, students used their letter-writing power to advocate for broader changes. They first identified BIG problems that they wanted to try to solve, and then they wrote to local, state, and national leaders to suggest solutions. Students expressed their concerns about environmental issues, homelessness, negative political speech, animal rights, educational equity, hurricane relief, and many other major challenges facing our nation and community.

After feedback from classmates and much revision, the letters were finished! On February 1, we walked to the Central Square Post Office to mail them (and students took a quick peek in City Hall to see where the mayor and city council make decisions)!
