New MakerSpace

New MakerSpace

Mr. H is putting together a Makerspace in the basement. The vision is to have a space in the building where students can come in and immediately want to create with LEGOs, K’nex kits, and other building materials. Third, fourth, and fifth grade students recently created marble chutes from pipe insulation, craft sticks, tape, and Dixie cups. They would have a successful chute, but they would always think of something else a marble would do. For example, they began to use a pulley that would pull a craft stick and release a different marble that could go around a corner.

If students could do anything else in a Makerspace, what do they want to do? Do students also have a name for the Makerspace? Do parents have any ideas for what a Makerspace should have?

Mr. H is grateful to Leigh Estabrook (MIT Lemuelson Center) for her help and thoughts.

In a recent choice course, first and second graders were asked to build a tower from index cards. The index cards held pennies.
