FMA Schedule Redesign

family meetingThe Fletcher Maynard Academy is redesigning the school day schedule for all students.

Specifically, beginning for School Year 2025-2026, changes to the school day will include:

  • Increase instructional time for ELA and Math, and introduce a Social Emotional Learning curriculum

  • Expand access to after school tutoring programs to support students in literacy and math

  • Provide additional educator training and coaching

FMA will maintain an 8-hour school day, with adjustments to instructional time and additional support for students.

Why a Redesign?

FMA is a beloved neighborhood school that is a valuable part of our district’s history. When we look at student data, it’s very clear that there is high-quality teaching and learning happening at the FMA.

As presented to the School Committee beginning in November 2024, data also clearly shows that while students at the FMA are growing academically, the school needs more support/district oversight. We have a responsibility to provide specific structures and interventions to ensure students enjoy the same high quality educational experience and outcomes as other CPS students. Therefore, adjustments are needed in order to enhance students’ academic growth.

Our goal is to design a daily schedule that improves learning for all students at the FMA.

What is Changing?

Most of the components of the redesign will only directly impact the activities of the school day. not directly impact families. All of the proposed changes to the schedule will include reorganizing portions of school day schedules and instructional time for students.

Here is what you can expect as part of this redesign process:

  1. Students’ daily schedules will change. Details of a proposed new schedule are still being developed, and will be shared with families as soon as possible but no later than August 2025. Students will experience more daily instruction time for math and/or ELA, and social emotional learning.

  2. More time for Social Emotional Learning. CPS is investing in Wayfinder, a research-based social emotional learning curriculum used at other schools in the district, to better support students and educators as they develop future ready skills.

  3. Increased Access to Excel Tutoring. More students at FMA will be prioritized for Excel Tutoring, the district’s after school high impact tutoring program. Eligible students will receive additional support in literacy and math, as well as enrichment opportunities, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:45-6PM at FMA.

  4. Improved Professional Learning Systems for Educators. The FMA is a unique school community, with an extended school day schedule. The Redesign Team and Instructional Leadership Team at FMA are planning more tailored professional development opportunities for staff that will be offered over the next two years.

The redesign process is happening in three phases:

  • Phase 1 (December 2024 - February 2025): The Redesign Team met and engaged staff, students, and caregivers to create scheduling recommendations.
  • Phase 2 (February - June 2025): The Redesign Team combined with the FMA Instructional Leadership Team is planning professional development for FMA educators/staff.
  • Phase 3 (June 2025 - June 2026): Implement redesign elements.
