Courageous ConversationsFaculty, family, and community members of the FMA met again on Monday evening for the fourth in the series of FMA Courageous Conversations. So far, the group has explored the concepts of racism as a construct, Institutional and Ideological, in alongside interpersonal and intrapersonal racism, and how our implicit biases can lead to microaggressions--subtly racialized behavior that the actor and the receiver may not completely understand or even believe. At this past Monday’s meeting the group discussed how these aspects of race and racialized behaviors could impact how and when the FMA community in general, and faculty and staff in particular, should approach the topic of race with students. We had a very thoughtful and comprehensive discussion that looked at the topic from multiple perspectives and experiences. And we ended the evening more in agreement than when we began. The group will continue to refine its thoughts on the matter and provide guidance for the school. If you’re interested in getting involved with the discussion, or joining the last meeting for this year (Monday, May 21st | 5:30 - 8PM) please contact Uche or 617.642.8657.
